120 Hudson St. NYC (212) 219-0666 (Cash only on the weekends) Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Website: http://bubbys.com Map We find the sight of a pie case uplifting. And the sight of a full pie case is positively inspiring. Such was the case when we walked into Bubby’s, a source of home cooking in New York’s Tribeca neighborhood since 1990. The round case enticed us with the mile-high apple (really about 6 inches), maple pecan, peanut butter chocolate, key lime, Michigan sour cherry and banana cream, plus some cakes, including red velvet, a New York City specialty. We eschewed the two pleasant dining rooms, with their exposed brick walls and streetside windows, and perched ourselves on two of the eight stools at the copper-top bar. Nearer the pie case, don’t you see. The bartender was stunned to learn we wanted pie (banana cream for Jennifer, cherry for John) before we were going to dinner with friends. He scrunched his brow, then philosophized, “Hey, life is for living.” (Well, the thing was, our friends were taking us to a fancy place in Brooklyn, whose one-word French name hardly even tells you it’s a restaurant, and we were going to pay out the wazzoo and, we feared, not have any pie for dessert. Sure enough, our $80 meal came with a postage stamp-size dot of chocolate that the chef had the audacity to call “cake.” Get outta here with that stuff!) We might have done better just to have our dinner, before or after the pie, at Bubby’s. The special mac ’n’ cheeses, like the rosemary-and-gruyere or the cauliflower, goat cheese and roasted garlic, sounded delicious. And how about the homemade potato chips with blue cheese sauce? The menu also includes Mexican food, soup, salads, burgers and barbecue. Everything is made fresh, including the grapefruit soda and the spicy hot chocolate (with jalapeno – whoa!). That’s for another day, perhaps. This visit was all about the pie, and our slices were good enough to earn a return visit. When you come, you might luck into the New York State apple whiskey crumble pie. Save a slice for us. Bubby’s other location: 1 Main St. Brooklyn, NY (718) 222-0666. |
