American Pieways reviews

YOUR GUIDES TO GREAT PIE

John Forsyth is a book author and world traveler with discriminating tastes and a storyteller's heart. He and his wife, Jennifer, are traipsing along America's backroads and "pieways" in search of good desserts by the slice and sweet stories. You can find all of their reviews linked from the home page.  Here's to good eating and good reading.

"There are lots of jokes involving pies; they’re funnier than other foods, somehow."
-- The New York Times, June 15, 2009

OUR RATINGS

One slice:
You’re in danger of suffering pie withdrawal, and no alternatives in sight.

Two slices: You used to think this was good pie, before American Pieways set you straight.

Three slices:
If pies came out of your oven this tasty, you’d start a bakery.

Four slices:
Buy another slice to go, ’cause this’ll still be good in the morning.

Five slices: Whoa! Redraw that vacation itinerary to include this pie.

Six slices: Member of the Holy Church of the Flaky Crust.

If you like retro, you’ll love Du-par’s. It’s in the Golden Gate Casino, for starters, which borders on seedy. It’s in old downtown Las Vegas, where the serious gamblers hang out. We almost expected the Rat Pack to stroll in and order strong coffee before heading to the bar.
The whole feel at Du-par’s is that of a vintage establishment even if it’s only a few years old under this name. (This is a brother restaurant to the original in the Farmer’s Market.) Beveled glass doors, black and white tiled floors and mirrors invite the diner into its dark confines.
The old wooden, worn counter has seen its share of breakfasts (served all day) and pie slid along it. Even the waitresses wear old-style white uniforms with black-checked aprons, which match the tiled floor of the place. It’s safe to say that Du-par’s is at the far end of the scale from our dinner choice on the same day, at Aureole’s (octopus and hearts of palm salad, beef tenderloin, rack of lamb
and a bottle of an earthy 1988 Nuits St. George Pinot Noir, a Jean Philippe Marchand), but to us that just makes for a balanced diet.
There’s a reason the breakfasts at Du-par’s are popular. The pancakes were named best in the U.S. by Esquire magazine, the orange juice is squeezed fresh and the preserves are made fresh. And check out those gorgeous doughnuts in the photo below. Soups, salads, chicken pot pie, lemon chicken prime rib, beef liver and meat loaf also populate the menu.
Whether at breakfast or another meal, we’re here to warn you: Your pie choice will be difficult. Peach, green apple, cherry, rhubarb, blueberry, boysenberry, gooseberry, raspberry
… man, they love their berries at Du-par’s.
But there’s also pumpkin, mince, sweet potato, egg custard, coconut custard, Southern pecan, lemon meringue … we don’t normally just list flavors, but this menu is so darned impressive.
So, we continue: There’s chocolate cream, of course, but also blueberry, cherry and strawberry pies in the cream variety. Not to mention a banana split, brownie sundae, malt or milkshake, hot fudge sundae and bread pudding.
Any flavor goes with the cheeseburger and fries, which we can heartily recommend. We went with banana cream and boysenberry – we have two winners! And Andrea Baldwin, our
waitress, was a real bright spot in the darkness (see photo on home page), making excellent recommendations and giving us her life story.
Whether you’re going fancy later for dinner or not, Du-par’s is the perfect place for pie sustenance before heading to the casino, Cirque du Soleil or a walk down the Strip.
