471 Main St. South Berwick, Maine (207) 384-8361 Lunch and Dinner As we got out of the car in the dirt parking lot at Fogarty’s, we heard one of the best recommendations a traveler can get: “Be sure to save room for dessert.” A couple coming out to their car threw that wisdom and us, and the man added, “Get the chocolate cream pie.” In fact, he said it twice more for emphasis. Or maybe we looked like we didn’t believe him. But we did, and John ordered the chocolate cream after a hearty dinner of haddock with blue cheese sauce, a cup of clam chowder that didn’t hide the sherry, a salad and a roll. After her fried-clam dinner, Jennifer was a bit more stumped by the pie selection that included apple, deep dish apple crisp, bumbleberry, cookie dough, Grape Nut custard, chocolate mousse, peanut butter and the Maine state confection, whoopie pie. She could have gone for the raspberry white chocolate cheesecake, Indian pudding, carrot cake, chocolate cake or classic cheesecake, but of course our eyes look only for pie. She decided on the bumbleberry, a Pepto-hued filling of apple, rhubarb, strawberry, blueberry and raspberry, and it was a mistake. The flavors clashed, and the fresh crust and crumb topping didn’t save it. The waitress sensed our displeasure and offered to sub it out with a slice of lemon cream, a rare specialty on the Fogarty’s menu. It was considerably tastier although sweeter and not as tart as we usually like our lemon pie. The chocolate cream, as promised, was worth dining at Fogarty’s for, with a traditional style, messy, and with chocolate shavings on top. It was a worthy representative of Maine pie in our first-ever meal in the state. The meal was a fine representative, as well. We chose from a wide variety of seafood. Jennifer’s clams were lightly fried and really hit the spot. The dining area, with its wood paneling and white trim, was comfortable and was so uncrowded it could have held two more tables without being cramped. We were glad to be in out of the wind as a storm front passed through town. We were able to sit at a window table that gave us a view of our car with Chloe the pie dog sitting in the back, watching alertly for us to come out. When we finally did after our fine meal at Fogarty’s, all three of us were happy. |
