American Pieways reviews

YOUR GUIDES TO GREAT PIE

John Forsyth is a book author and world traveler with discriminating tastes and a storyteller's heart. He and his wife, Jennifer, are traipsing along America's backroads and "pieways" in search of good desserts by the slice and sweet stories. You can find all of their reviews linked from the home page.  Here's to good eating and good reading.

"There are lots of jokes involving pies; they’re funnier than other foods, somehow."
-- The New York Times, June 15, 2009

OUR RATINGS

One slice:
You’re in danger of suffering pie withdrawal, and no alternatives in sight.

Two slices: You used to think this was good pie, before American Pieways set you straight.

Three slices:
If pies came out of your oven this tasty, you’d start a bakery.

Four slices:
Buy another slice to go, ’cause this’ll still be good in the morning.

Five slices: Whoa! Redraw that vacation itinerary to include this pie.

Six slices: Member of the Holy Church of the Flaky Crust.

With a fireplace in the corner, wood trim in the dining room and a sign saying, "Up North is a state of mind," the Grand Traverse Pie Company is looking for a North Country feeling to go with your pie. After all, the home cafe for this Michigan chain is in Grand Traverse, way up on a bay of Lake Michigan. The customer arriving in an all-weather jacket and a knit cap on a coolish April day, as though he’d just come out of the woods, only added to the atmosphere.
The Grand Traverse makes some fine pies to go with its atmosphere, and you’ll find one to fit your taste (try the cherry), even if no Lake Superior fishing trawler captain arrives while you’re eating.

The list of berry pies is long but definitely try the cherry.

Forty flavors line the shelves and pie case, and a friendly employee will search diligently for you if you don’t see the one you’re inclined to try. (Note how the pie crusts have identifying clues in them, like “BK” for blackberry and “SP” for the cherry with the artificial sweetener Splenda.) If your flavor hasn’t been cut into, one of the women behind the counter will wield her six-way pie slicer like Zorro with a dessert fetish and produce a perfect slice for you in a jiffy.
The apple pies alone come in six varieties, and the apple dumpling pie includes “seven whole apples” (well, seven entire apples, sliced). The dumpling part – one per pie slice – gives a puffy pastry look to the serving. Caramel topping is microwaved before being squirted over the top, and pecans are added. Unfortunately, the topping was cold by the time we got our slice to the table, primarily because the slice was served cold. Maybe we should have asked for it to be served hot. (Maybe we should have tried the cherry.)
The list of berry pies includes combinations of strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, apples and rhubarb. They come in regular or crumb varieties. Blueberries, blackberries and peaches also come in two or three varieties. The cream pies include butterscotch, banana, key lime and lemon meringue. Jennifer’s peanut butter pie was rich with a crumbly crust, and a very sweet, sugar-enhanced peanut butter layer.
Oh, did we mention the cherry pie? Yes, it’s the one to have at the Grand Traverse. Featuring Northern Michigan Montmorency tart cherries, it comes in six styles, and we can heartily recommend the plain old cherry pie. Actually, we took a slice to go and ate it for breakfast next morning, and it was still delicious.
The folks at the Grand Traverse take their pie seriously. The bathrooms are even labeled Pie Guys and Pie Gals. But with a full menu of sandwiches, salads, wraps, soups and quiches (not to mention chicken and prime rib pot pies), breakfast fare (including cinnamon rolls) and a spare decor, the place resembles Panera Bread and feels very much like a chain restaurant, which it is.
Bottom line: pies good, restaurant chainlike. You decide.
