American Pieways reviews

YOUR GUIDES TO GREAT PIE

John Forsyth is a book author and world traveler with discriminating tastes and a storyteller's heart. He and his wife, Jennifer, are traipsing along America's backroads and "pieways" in search of good desserts by the slice and sweet stories. You can find all of their reviews linked from the home page.  Here's to good eating and good reading.

"There are lots of jokes involving pies; they’re funnier than other foods, somehow."
-- The New York Times, June 15, 2009

OUR RATINGS

One slice:
You’re in danger of suffering pie withdrawal, and no alternatives in sight.

Two slices: You used to think this was good pie, before American Pieways set you straight.

Three slices:
If pies came out of your oven this tasty, you’d start a bakery.

Four slices:
Buy another slice to go, ’cause this’ll still be good in the morning.

Five slices: Whoa! Redraw that vacation itinerary to include this pie.

Six slices: Member of the Holy Church of the Flaky Crust.

If Jay Jay Cafe were your neighborhood diner, with its daily specials and its homemade pies, you'd probably be okay with that. After all, the meals, such as the hamburger steak with two vegetables, or grilled chicken spinach salad, are hearty.
And the pies, well, they're okay, too. The selection is more than okay: up to 25 flavors, including banana cream, German chocolate and rhubard every day, and egg custard, pumpkin, strawberry banana and blueberry cream cheese in season.
Daily specials include a slice. We each made a fruit choice (peach and blueberry) and enjoyed our choices a lot. Fillings were fresh; the crusts were shinier and harder than they might have been. Is it a coating of butter that causes that hard shine? It's no big deal; we're just saying.
Service was extremely friendly and helpful, the menu was extensive and the pies were pretty. In its more than five years under current management and a spell before that, Jay Jay has provided well for this neighborhood of South Arlington. We never ate at Jay Jay under the prior ownership, so we don't know how it place compares now. Anybody care to contribute an opinion? Write us at pieways@gmail.com.
But here's something that's more than okay: Free desserts after 3 p.m. every Saturday.
